what is a good feminist anyway?
Madonna shares a poignant and fierce message in her acceptance speech as Billboard’s Woman of the Year in the video below. Please take a few minutes to watch and I guarantee that you’ll be thinking of her fierce words and touching vulnerability long afterwards.
what she says about being a woman in the music business
I think Madonna has always been deliberately provocative in order to get our attention. The summer I bought her album, Luck Star she woke me up to what pushing boundaries meant. She inspired me to express myself, and I thought there was nothing my generation couldn’t achieve. Now, I am at times bitterly disappointed by how those aspirations have not come to pass. Which is why we need her now more than ever.
She pushes us to become conscious of what goes unnoticed within us. She is so clear, so true, and so immovable in her conviction to push for self-expression and self-acceptance. She calls out the unspoken rules for being a woman, and I respect her so much for being a champion fighter for injustice. She is a mirror for all of us to look deep within ourselves and do an honest inventory of our own judgements and self-limiting beliefs about what we can be in this life. She asks us to examine our complacency toward the status quo, our discomfort with our own sexuality, and how we contribute to the problem by accepting anything less than equality in the world. This has never been more clear to me than this year.
what happens if you don’t follow the rules is bullshit
She is so clear, so true, and so immovable in her conviction to push for self-expression and self-acceptance. She is a mirror for all of us to look deep within ourselves and do an honest inventory of our own judgements and self-limiting beliefs about what we can be in this life. She asks us to dig deep within ourselves and ask if we are playing small. She asks us to take a critical view to how we judge others; especially other women. She exposes the ugly truths that women operate within; or against. If that means being a bad feminist, Madonna, then I’m a bad feminist, too.
As women, we need to start appreciating our own worth, and each other’s worth. Seek out strong women to befriend, to align yourself with, to learn from, to be inspired by, to collaborate with, to support, to be enlightened by.” -Madonna
It is my greatest wish that we cultivate consciousness, stand up for each other, and push back against ingrained norms that keep us following rules that do not serve our greatest potential. Make those that would keep you small your greatest motivators to keep going as she did and continues to do.
