We all come into this world hard-wired with different talents, tastes, and preferences and a dharma, or unique life path to walk. I believe that we are all put here on Earth to do something unique with our gifts, including you. When who you are at your core aligns with what you do with your life gets really BIG. In this complicated human life, getting your life aligned with you heart is often difficult. It can often feel impossible, especially later in life when it feels like it’s just too late for you and your dreams.
how you know your life could be bigger
- You’re not living the life that you always wanted, because you made compromises long ago or things happened that were out of your control.
- You feel stuck and frustrated with your current life.
- You sometimes feel that your life is passing you by and that you need to make changes but have no idea how to begin or try and never seem to get anywhere.
start living your biggest life in 5 steps and 5 weeks
In order to be able to conjure the energy and stamina required to live your unique purpose, there are some universal foundations that must be put into place
- getting in shape
- getting organized
- eating healthy food to fuel your body and give you sustained long term energy to pursue your best life.
In order to pursue your Big Life you’ve got to put these foundations in place and make them an integral part of your life first. Of the five steps below, the first four are the basic steps that must be attended to get the foundation operating before you complete your with step and plan and pursue your Big Life.
I promise you that if you have the will, desire, and perseverance to put these steps into place that you will be astounded at the energy and clarity that result from building a strong foundation of health and well-being. This five step plan is the result of years of research and experimentation in my own personal journey.
Have the courage to follow these steps you will be surprised to discover the new loving and trusting relationship that you develop with yourself. Getting in shape and heating healthy to this end, and not in order to look a certain preconceived way or weigh some randomly applied weight is a joyous journey and one that is sustainable for life.
Complete each step in its proper order. Set aside daily and weekly time in your calendar to properly implement each of these steps. Each week you’ll be adding in a significant lifestyle aspect. As such it will require a few hours each Sunday prior to reading through the information, developing an action plan, and working these changes into your calendar week. At the end of your week take some time to assess the impact and reflect on how you feel about your week. Then work through the material for the next week, and add in the elements to build upon what you’re already doing.
This is an intense five weeks of adding some significant lifestyle changes that can be life-changing. You’ll need to commit the time and resources to take full advantage of this swift foundation building. You can always spewed out these steps if you need more time, and you should if you find that you’re starting from scratch with each week.
how the big life start plan will affect your life at the end of five weeks:
- You’ll be working out 3-6 days a week at activities you enjoy doing. You have the motivation to continue as a permanent lifestyle for long term health and wellness.
- You’ll have an organized home. Things are in their place. To do items have been scheduled or taken care of, and you have a system in place for staying organized over time.
- You understand that that honoring the calendar is a skill set that when implemented makes all desired actions as good as done. You honor the calendar because you honor and value actions that bring you the best and biggest life for yourself.
- You’re planning out you meals ahead of your week. You’re meal-prepping on Sundays and Wednesdays, and shopping on Saturday or Sunday and possibly Wednesday (if needed). You’re using my meal prep & plan system that simplifies and streamlines planning, shopping, and cooking for you and your whole family.
- You’ve identified personal goals that you’d like to achieve over the next year. You have life plan on how you’ll move away from obligations that don’t serve you, and toward specific actions that do. You’ve taken the long view of your next 12 months and have taken advantage of advanced planning and specific calendared action steps that make you feel wonderfully confident that you are, by week 5 living the life you’ve always imagined. you’re doing it day by day. you feel strong, healthy, organized, and purposeful.
If that’s a life that you’re willing to work hard for, then let’s get started!
step one (week 1-2): get motivated to get physically strong and healthy forever
If you’re already a physically active person who works up a sweat 5-6 days per week doing activities that include weight training, then you can skip ahead to week two. If you have an inconsistent or nonexistent relationship with taking care of your physical health and strength, then you’ll need to find the right motivation to get and stay in shape for the rest of your life or all efforts are a waste of time.
I always had this pattern of getting in shape and then slacking off and letting all my hard work go. When I’d find myself once again out of shape; I’d finally restart my workouts in a fit of self loathing in order to get back in shape for a vacation or trip back home. When my vacation would end, I’d lose my motivation and slack off again. I hated everything about this dysfunctional relationship with taking care of my physical body. Even when I was in shape I had a constant anxiety because I knew in my heart that I couldn’t or wouldn’t sustain it.
This persisted until 2014 when I read an incredible book that convinced me beyond any doubt to dedicate 60 minutes a day, six days a week, to any intense exercise of my choosing. Doing this, it turns out, is scientifically proven to reverse the aging process within a year, minimize illness, and maximize health well into old age. I was in my mid 40’s looking at a future of uncertain health and wellness. Everything I read in this book predicted a scary and unpredictable future for me and my health. I could no longer rely on my youth to quickly lose a few pounds. I was beginning to have some stress related health issues. This book told me that, as much as I was capable to being in control of my health is possible; that this active lifestyle would likely make me functionally younger and keep me there well into my 70’s if I committed to that process now. I dove into it and documented my Younger This Year experiment.
a: I highly recommend you read about my journey in adopting this active lifestyle in my Younger This Year series I wrote in 2014. Begin with the first post here. Link to all the younger this year updates here: 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9
b: Read Younger Next Year for Women: Live Strong, Fit, and Sexy – Until You’re 80 and Beyond by Chris Crowley & Henry S. Lodge M.D. for the foundational motivation to adopt this active lifestyle.
c. Begin working out yourself asap. I suggest you start with 3 days a week for the first month and every month thereafter, add an additional day of exercise into your daily schedule until you reach six day a week.
step two (week 2): get organized
Next, you need to get your physical space in order so that you can start adopting new habits from an organized mindset. I wrote a simple step-by-step plan on how to get your home organized in one day. I promise you you will feel a renewed and awesome sense of possibility and excitement from completing this practice. Also, you will feel a sense of peaceful freedom that comes from knowing that everything is scheduled and in its proper place. Years later I still go through periods of being more and less organized, but the main thing is that I have this working system in place to turn to when I need organization. It makes everything in your life easier. Link to that article here, then spend some time thinking about the organizational systems that will keep you on top of the business of your life. Invest some time into putting the systems in place. Get your significant other or family members involved helps make your home run more smoothly.
a: Read My post on how to get organized in one day.
b: schedule a full day on your calendar (see below) to get your home space organized.
step three (week 3): honor the calendar
You’ll need to use some kind of planner system to keep all of the foundational working parts of your week accounted for. This frees up your brain from having to try to remember everything and that gives you so much more found energy. Using a planner is an indispensable part of living a Big Life. Use an electronic or paper version depending on what serves you and the way you work best.
important: The keystone to this lifestyle is found in holding the calendar sacred. This means that you make a pact with yourself to honor the commitments that you put into your calendar. Love yourself enough to think clearly and logically just how much you can and are able to do before you write it your planner. On the flip side; also hold those commitments you’ve decided on ahead of time as sacred. Meet each obligation as if it was an appointment with the CEO of your company; which is true because you’re the CEO of you.
Meeting your commitments to yourself will, over time, begin to nurture a new and powerfully deep and trusting relationship with yourself. There is no better way to learn to depend on yourself and foster a sense of self-efficacy than to keep your promises to your higher self. Honoring the calendar will empower you to move beyond the foundations of a Big Life and begin to work toward higher level goals that your now healthy lifestyle can sustain in the long term.
a: Order yourself an Erin Condren Life Planner as soon as possible. It’s flexible enough to accommodate your workouts, eating plan, work and family commitments all in one place. Start plugging in your lifestyle commitments as soon as you get your planner, which will immediately give you a sense of control over your time, priorities, and ability to get things done. Using your planner will immediately move you toward making your big life a reality. Schedule your workouts for the week every Sunday, before anything else. After that, fill in appointments and work & family events.
step four (week 4): eat healthy by meal planning
Now that your space is organized and you’ve begun exercising daily, it’s time to commit to consistently eating healthy. Eating healthy food of your choosing is one of the most empowering things that you can do for yourself. Eating healthy is the final foundational prerequisite of living a big life. I’ve found only one way to do this, and that’s to meal plan. So, I created a meal planning and prep system with free downloadable printables to give myself a system to put into place to keep me on track and eating healthy over the long term.
a: Wait until week 4 in your Big Life plan to begin meal planning and prep work. This system involves adding shopping days and cooking times to your weekly calendar, so you’ll need to start accommodating those habits into the weekly rhythm of your life just as you did with the daily exercise. You should already have at least two weeks experience with planning out your week in your planner of choice before adding in meal prep and planning. Schedule shopping and meal prep times into your calendar on Sundays ahead of your week.

step five (week 5): make your big life plan
The process of getting you active, organized, and eating healthy over the previous five weeks is meant to bring you to a place where very little can now distract or stop you from manifesting the unique higher aspirations that you have for your life. You are ready.
This readying process is how you prime yourself to move beyond the common obstacles that keep us locked in the struggle to grow. If you have the willingness to put in the work ahead of time to take care of your physical body and nourish it with good and healthy food, then you will have the requisite strength and physical energy to put to your life’s higher purpose. If you have taken the time and care to organize your life then there is no confusion or delay as to how to move forward.
I wrote the Big New Year Life Plan to help me transform my craving for change in my life into an action plan for the life I really wanted for myself. It will help you discover what you really want. It will help you create the space to begin taking action. It will help you sort through the messy business of untangling yourself from current commitments and tracks that keep you moving in the wrong direction. This Life Plan is like a vision board and action plan for non-crafty people. It was written for New Year’s planning, but can be used at any time of year.
a: work though your plan diligently step by step.
b. Take a week or two to fully work through the plan. You’ll need to set aside some time to contemplate these questions, do the exercises and above all hear the small and quiet voice that always knows the answers that lie at the bottom of your heart so that you know exactly what to do.
c: As you work through your Plan, calendar all of the action steps required to bring you to your goals over the next 12 months into your planner. Use your skill of holding the calendar sacred, work hard, give yourself a wide berth of grace, and above all be as persistent and determined as you can possible be. When you do that, you’re actually already experiencing living you BIGGEST LIFE; a deeply satisfying life of self-actualization.
a final thought
There is no doubt in my mind that you have come into this world because you have incredible gifts to bestow on this world. Whether you work with your hands, champion a cause that is close to your heart, or you just can’t ignore that siren call to do that thing that has never left your heart. Know this, dear one – your life’s purpose is to walk that yellow brick road of your heart’s desires. Do not let another day go by that you have not resolved to embark on the greatest journey of this life – the journey to self-actualization. That IS living your Biggest Life. It isn’t always an easy journey but it is one that leaves no regrets.
